We also know that unless they are in a designated wet spot such as bathroom and laundry that most internal walls will not be Blueboard or some other waterproof drywall composite. As such, as soon as even low levels of water comes in contact the wall boards will absorb the moisture like a sponge!

Drywall or Gyprock walls left to dry on their own means a very long and slow evaporation process. So slow that the wallboards will weaken and become soft and even flimsy at best even with low amounts of water. In situations that have suffered a substantial exposure to water, the wallboards will eventually just fall to bits. And for the others that are not so bad, the time will come when something bangs lightly against them and now you have an instant hole in your wall.

But taking all the above into consideration, the news is not all that bad and the problems can be easily avoided at very little cost in most cases.
